The Messy Middle: Why Things Often Look Worse Before They Look Better (Home Organising)

If you've ever started home organising or decluttering a room, a wardrobe, a kitchen cupboard or even a whole house, you'll know exactly what "the messy middle" feels like, you maybe just didn't know it had a name or was a "thing". It's that point where everything has been pulled out, piles are everywhere and you find yourself wondering if you've made a terrible mistake.
The good news? It's completely normal, and it's not just in Home Organising either!
In fact, the messy middle is often a sign that real progress is happening.
What Is the Messy Middle?
The messy middle is the stage between "before" and "after."
It's the moment when you've emptied the cupboard, taken every item out of the wardrobe, or spread the contents of the spare room across the floor so you can properly assess what you have.
At this stage, the space often looks far worse than it did when you started.
Why? Because all of the hidden clutter is now visible. Instead of being tucked behind cupboard doors, shoved into drawers or hidden in storage boxes, everything is out in the open.

Why It Feels So Uncomfortable
The messy middle can trigger feelings of overwhelm, frustration and even panic.
Many people start questioning themselves:
Why did I start this?
It looked tidier before
I'll never get this finished
There's far more stuff here than I realised
How did this all fit in that space?
These feelings are completely understandable.
What you're seeing isn't new clutter. It's the same clutter that was already there. The difference is that you're finally dealing with it.
Trust the Process
When working with clients, it's often a case of reassuring them that the room may look worse for a short time.
That's because effective organising isn't about shuffling items from one place to another. It's about making decisions.
Before we can decide what stays, what goes, what gets donated and what needs a new home, we need to see everything.
The messy middle gives us the opportunity to:
Find duplicates
Identify items we no longer need
Group similar items together
Create storage solutions that actually work
Understand how much space we really need (not just what is available)
hHow you want your space to work for you
Without this step, lasting organisation is difficult to achieve.
The Magic Happens After the Mess
Once decisions have been made, the transformation starts.
Items are donated, recycled or returned to their proper place. Storage becomes more intentional. The space begins to work for you rather than against you.
Suddenly, the chaos starts to disappear. What looked like a disaster an hour ago becomes a calm, functional and organised space.
A Reminder When You're in the Middle of It
If you're currently surrounded by piles of belongings and wondering whether to give up, remember this:
You are not making a bigger mess...
You are uncovering the mess so that you can deal with it properly.
The messy middle isn't failure.
It's progress.
So take a deep breath, trust the process and keep going. The organised, clutter free space you're aiming for is often just on the other side of the mess.
Stuck in the Messy Middle?
Sometimes the hardest part of getting organised isn't the sorting, it's knowing where to start.
Whether you're staring at an overflowing wardrobe, a cluttered garage, a spare room that's become a dumping ground, (aka 'Room of Doom') or you're already knee deep in the messy middle and feeling overwhelmed, you don't have to tackle it alone.
I help people create calm, practical spaces that work for their everyday lives, providing a supportive, judgement free approach and can help you break projects down into manageable steps, make decisions with confidence, and see the process through to completion.
