How We Haven’t Emptied Our Black Bin in Over 2 Years

Did you know that at Sorted NI HQ we haven’t put our black/grey household waste bin out for over two years?

Sounds impossible, right? We thought so too - until we made a few small, manageable changes, and if we can do it, you can too.

1. Start small
We set ourselves a simple challenge: don’t put the bin out for two months.Since our black bin collection was every other week, that meant skipping just two grey bin days - nothing too scary. Once we managed that, it became a game to see how long we could stretch it.

2. Create a recycling station
If you want to keep your black bin from filling up, you need to make recycling the easy choice.
We gave every recycling stream its own spot - including soft plastics, which are now widely accepted in many supermarket collection points. When each category has a home, it becomes second nature to sort items as you go.

3. Reduce disposable purchases
Every disposable item you don’t buy is one less thing heading to landfill.
We started small - swapping one use cleaning cloths for washable ones, choosing refillable products, and saying no to unnecessary packaging. Before buying something, we’d ask: Can I reuse it? Can it be recycled? Do I really need it?

4. Donate to local charities
You’d be surprised what charities will take off your hands.
From used stamps and pens to empty biscuit packets (yes really!), there’s often a second life for things you’d normally bin. Check with your local charity shops and collection schemes - you’ll be amazed at the list. 5. Use sites like 'Path to Zero Waste NI'
This Facebook group is a brilliant resource for finding new homes or sustainable alternatives for tricky items.
If you’re not sure who might take something - or whether it can be reused - just post a photo and ask. You’ll often find someone nearby who needs exactly what you’re getting rid of.

💡 Top Tip: Cutting down your black bin waste isn’t about perfection — it’s about making small swaps that add up over time.
